Ethiopian Landscape

Stretching over 4,000 miles, the Nile River is the longest river in the world. The two main rivers which feed the Nile are the White Nile and the Blue Nile, so named because of the color of their waters.

The White Nile begins at Lake Victoria in Uganda while the Blue Nile begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. The two branches of the Nile merge at Khartoum, the capital of the Sudan. From this confluence, the Nile continues to flow northward into Egypt and on to the Mediterranean Sea.

Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia. "Abay" is the Amharic name for the Blue Nile. The Blue Nile contributes more than 70% of the flow of the Nile. Just as the Blue Nile is a main source of nourishment for the Nile River, we are a source of cultural and culinary nourishment for the city of Pittsburgh.
